Picnic in Barkowice

On 6 August 2011 (Saturday) in Barkowice, a "Picnic with EKOROB", i.e.  an information and educational meeting, including social consultations for local community and tourists, was held. Picnic was organised by Regional Water Management Board and European Regional Centre for Ecohydrology under the auspices of UNESCO under LIFE+ EKOROB Project implementation.

The meeting was organised for inhabitants of Barkowice village (both for owners of all-year round households and summer houses) as well as for tourists staying at informal  także osoby wypoczywające nad zbiornikiem na „dzikich” kempingach. Representatives of local authorities at the village and municipality level and Chief of Voluntary Fire Service.
During the meeting, designs of ecotonic zones planned for construction in Barkowice Zatoka and Barkowice Łąka demo sites under LIFE+EKOROB Project were presented.
A principle of ecotonic zone activity, including the use of denitrification wall, was presented as a solution for sustainable prevention of pollution influx coming with groundwater from intensively used land.

Participants of the meeting receiving information materials concerning EKOROB Project, Water Framework Directive and had an opportunity of Nitrates Directive. Educational materials were developed for children.

There was a lively discussion concerning causes and effects of the pollution from agricultural areas, and metods of its reduction. A survey concerning the “Study of perception, satisfaction and attitude of the Sulejów Reservoir local community and tourists” was delivered among the Picnic’s participants.

During artistic part, picnic participants watched a performance by the Farmers Wives Association from Majkowice, who also prepared snacks made of regional produce. The agenda also included competitions and games for children, and was completed with an integration bonfire.

The following topics were raised and requests submitted during the meeting:

  • Need to increase surface of a beach planned;
  • Construction of an additional recreational pier on the beach;
  • Placing a No Entry sign to ban driving into the area below the scarp, and also the need of keeping access road to transport boats;
  • Participants expressed their interest in the form of ownership of the land designated for investments and areas adjacent to the State Treasury plots as well as in options of using the land following the completion of these investments; they wanted to know who would look after technical condition and cleanliness of the sites, and whether their public and free of charge nature would be maintained;
  • The issue of declining fish population in the reservoir was raised;
  • Request concerning the need of undertaking a waste management-related initiative aiming at cooperation of the RBWM in Warsaw with four municipalities located in the direct basin of the reservoir;
  • Request of addressing the issue of drainage chambers in the direct vicinity of the reservoir in the town of Barkowice.
